MUD clients
A MUD client is the app that connects you to a game and handles useful extras such as triggers, aliases, logging, maps, scripting, and sound. Accessibility varies a lot, so this page keeps practical notes beside each client.
These notes are intentionally conservative. Screen reader support can depend on your operating system, speech software, plugins, and the specific soundpack or profile you install.
VIP Mud
Official VIP Mud page
Windows client built with blind players strongly in mind. It includes scripting and sound support, and is often one of the easier starting points for screen reader users who want a dedicated MUD client.
Accessibility notes: Strong blind-player focus. Good candidate for players who want a client designed around speech access rather than a visual client later adapted for it.
MUSHclient
Official MUSHclient page · screen reader resources
Free Windows client with plugins, triggers, aliases, timers, logging, and Lua scripting. A lot of older MUD soundpacks and accessibility setups were made for MUSHclient.
Accessibility notes: Popular with screen reader users when paired with the right plugins and setup. It can be very powerful, but new users may benefit from preconfigured packages or game-specific instructions.
TinTin++
Official TinTin++ page · source repository
Cross-platform terminal MUD client with a deep scripting language, triggers, aliases, mapping, logging, and strong automation features.
Accessibility notes: Because it is terminal-based, it may work well with terminal/screen reader workflows for some players. It is powerful but more technical than VIP Mud or a preconfigured MUSHclient package.
Mudlet
Official Mudlet site · screen reader manual
Modern cross-platform client with Lua scripting, rich UI tools, packages, mapping, GMCP support, and active development.
Accessibility notes: Mudlet has screen reader documentation and community work around accessibility, but experience can vary. Check the screen reader manual and whether your MUD has a Mudlet accessibility package.
Other clients and browser clients
Some MUDs provide their own web client. Others have community packages for clients such as BlowTorch, BeipMU, Atlantis, or game-specific browser interfaces.
Accessibility notes: Browser clients can be excellent or terrible depending on how they announce new output, manage focus, and expose text to assistive technology. If a game has a dedicated accessibility mode, try that before giving up on the web client.
Choosing a client
If you are new and use a screen reader, start with the client your chosen MUD community already supports. A mediocre client with a maintained soundpack can beat a theoretically perfect client with no setup help. If you are a maintainer, list your pack with clear client/version requirements so players know what they need before downloading.
